The Award-Winning Science Behind Centile Bioscience

Centile Bioscience converts routine clinical brain imaging into structured, quantitative, population-referenced biological measurements, transforming imaging from a qualitative diagnostic tool into scalable measurement infrastructure for precision neurology. In practice, that means a single brain scan, traditionally used once, then filed away, becomes a long-term, reusable asset for clinical care and neuroscience. 

Each measurement derived from the scan is scored against a large reference population by age and sex, across the human lifespan, the same way a pediatric growth chart scores a child's height or weight against thousands of peers. It's the shift Centile Bio calls from archive to asset, and it's what it was built to deliver at scale.

The company’s founding science is the Nature 2022 study, "Brain charts for the human lifespan." The research went on to win the inaugural FASEB/NIH DataWorks! Grand Prize, one of only two Grand Prize awards selected from a field of more than 100 competing research groups nationwide. The prize, awarded by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and the National Institutes of Health, recognizes research that makes data reusable at scale.

Assembling, harmonizing, and openly sharing data so other researchers can build on it is what makes population-referenced measurement possible. That same discipline carries straight through to how Centile works at scale today.

The study drew on 123,984 MRI scans from 101,457 participants, spanning 115 days post-conception to age 100, making it one of the largest normative neuroimaging references ever published. It was co-authored by Centile Bio co-founder and CEO Jakob Seidlitz, PhD, alongside Richard A. I. Bethlehem and Simon R. White, with collaborators from the University of Cambridge, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania, and King’s College London.

Centile Bio was created to advance population brain charting, from a published reference into practical measurement infrastructure that clinicians, researchers, and industry partners can use.

Winning the DataWorks! Grand Prize was a starting point, not a finish line. A single brain scan holds far more information than any radiology report captures, and most of it goes unused once the report is filed away. That is the gap Centile Bio was built to close: activating hidden data and turning it into advanced neuroimaging intelligence for precision medicine.
